Explore real life topics that students can relate to using learning strategies driven by student inquiry

The topics of the NOWtech investigations are drawn from actual news events that are relevant to middle school kids such as:

• A virus outbreak closes a school
• An oil pipeline leaks into a community’s water supply
• New environmental requirements push a school district to replace its diesel school busses with electric busses

Digging into these issues entices middle schoolers into the realms of science and technology, illustrating the relevance of science with its societal purposes. Students use a variety of methods throughout their investigations. They engage in group work, independent work, learning games, online research, creating presentations, making calculations, proposing and evaluating solutions, and presenting their findings.

Bring real-word science and active learning into your classroom

Each investigation spans 5-7 days of science lessons, during which your primary role is to guide students through the activities without needing to create new materials or lectures. Each lesson is self-contained and supplies all the materials needed to complete the investigation, including student activities, images and slides, background reading material, assessments, and a detailed teacher’s guide. They can be implemented in their entirety, or selected sections can be used to fit the needs of individual classrooms.
